U2 frontman Bono led the tributes to the singer and songwriter, who had a string of hits over two decades including Fairytale Of New York with The Pogues. She was hit in the water in an area thought to be reserved for swimmers at the coral island of Cozumel, off the Yucatan peninsula, as she holidayed with her two children. The boys, Jamie and Louis, are believed to have been with her in the water but were unhurt. 24/12/00: MacColl pushed her elder son out of the path of a motor cruiser seconds before it struck and killed her, it was reported. The 41-year-old star died after surfacing from a scuba dive with her sons Jamie and Louis off the Mexican coral island of Cozumel, off the Yucatan peninsula.
